Greeting

In 2003, I accepted an invitation to become the seventh professor of the Department of Neuropsychiatry at Nagasaki University School of Medicine and was appointed from Sapporo.

On July 26, 1907, psychiatry was offered as a course that was independent from internal medicine at the Nagasaki Vocational School of Medicine, and Tokyo Imperial University Medical School's assistant Dr.Noboru Ishida was appointed he first professor of psychiatry at the early age of 31.

The hisotry of the Department of Neuropsychiatry of Nagasaki University School of Medicine, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007, had begun at that point.

According to the latest WHO reports, milions of people around the world currently suffer from mental disorders.

Considering the fact that i is impossible to count all of the diseases that currently exist, they reported that the rang e of 25.3% to 33.5% of people suffering from mental disorders in low and middle income countries are unable to fulfill their natural life span.

Here I would like to underline that many mental disorders are preventable, and it is possible to promote mental health in social welfare departments and also other departments.

The WHO has increasingly shifted its focus from physica health problems to mental health problems in recent years.

In any event, embarking on a world-wide collaboraion is inevitable due to he globalization in the 21st century and at the same time, and important task to undetake spontaneously.

The continued presence of the WHO Collaborating Centre here at Nagasaki University is significant because it covers the area of Nagasaki, in which it was established, and also the entire region of Japan as well as the entire East region.

It can be said that this WHO Collaborating Center will also expected to actively disseminate information in order to meet various needs both domestically and internationally.
